Sewing Machine 101: Learn the Basics + Build Your Skills

Got a sewing machine gathering dust? Or maybe you’re brand new and eager to learn? Join us for Sewing Machine 101, a beginner-friendly workshop that will walk you through the essential skills needed to get comfortable and confident with your machine.

🧵 What You’ll Learn

  • Understand how to operate your sewing machine

  • Learn basic sewing techniques for mending and simple construction

  • Explore fabric selection, pattern basics, and pressing/ironing skills

  • Complete small hands-on projects during class

This course is all about building a strong foundation—so you can repair, create, and stitch with ease and confidence.

🪡 What to Bring

  • Your working sewing machine that can do both straight and zigzag stitches

    • Machines should ideally be made after 2010 and in good working condition (plug it in, test the pedal, bring universal needles, and the accessories bag that came with your machine)

👩‍🎨 Who Can Join
Open to adults (ages 18+) of all sewing levels who are ready to get to know their machine! Total beginners welcome.

🌸 About our amazing instructor:
JeanEva Alvarez is an Austin-based fiber artist committed to sustainability and self-expression. Her specializations include costume design, crochet and knit pattern drafting, tailoring, and general mending/darning. She is a professional artist and has previously worked as a crochet designer for Oscar De La Renta. She is a native Texan, raised in Corpus Christi, TX and also holds a Master of Public Health degree from George Washington University. “One of the best feelings in the world is having the knowledge to fix something when it’s broken or torn. Sharing that knowledge with others is a passion of mine, I hope to be of service to the community in that way!”
